Installing a TKO into a 3rd generation Camaro/Firebird (‘82-’92)

If you’re replacing the T-5 5sp, then you’ll need our “F-late” GM TKO.  This ships with the required bellhousing adapter plate, and this transmission is designed specifically to replace your T5.

The torque arm mount from your T5 will work with the TREMEC 5sp.

If you get the “F-Late TKO”, you’ll need to install the C6 slip yoke onto your driveshaft.

The shifter will fit into your existing shifter opening, but will be slightly forward.  See some installation pics here.  With a straight shifter bar, it will hit the ash tray in 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears, not to mention that it’s a long reach.  The shifter bar can be moved rearward with a simple spacer block, similar to what is shown on the pics on this page.  It’ll need to be moved rearward about 2.5” to be centered in the console. One way to accomplish this is a simple 3.5” piece of flat steel.  Drill 4 holes 2.5” part, such that you can                                 bolt this piece to the shifter stub, and bolt the shifter bar to the other end.

If you’re replacing an automatic, then you can purchase the ‘F-late’ TKO, and most utilize the parts listed on my auto-to-manual package (click here to see it).

Here’s a complete package of everything you might need for this swap.

Optional item but recommended: Torque arm bracket, $80.00.  This kit allows you to bolt the TKO up to your torque arm bracket.

I know the crossmember on the ‘84 will work without modification.  I’m not positive, but I think this is true for all the 3rd gen F-body cars.

You’ll need to shorten your driveshaft, and install a C6 slip yoke onto it.

Note the shifter info in the above section for details about fitting in the console.  Obviously you’ll need to cut an opening in the tunnel to allow the shifter to come through.

We recommend a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch, and a McLeod steel bellhousing for $415.00.

We do have a source for getting a set of clutch pedals for you, prices range $80-$150.

If you plan on using a GM bellhousing from a similar year Camaro, your starter may not work, and you may need to get a starter specific to a manual transmission.

Details that pertain to either situation:

Our GM Speedometer gear adapter will work directly with your mechanical speedo cable.  We also have an electrical speedometer gear adapter to work with your electronic speedometer.

The transmission will fit into your tunnel with little or no modifications.

If your car originally has a hydraulic clutch setup, we can provide the Master Cylinder and slave Cylinder assy for $160.00.

Optional item, but recommended:  Crossmember relocation kit, $ 70.00.  This kit allows you to use your original frame-crossmember bolt holes.
