Installing a TKO into a 1968-72 GM A-Body
For my detailed write-up of installing a TKO into a ‘69 Chevelle, please read my article hosted by Team Chevelle.
The TH350 Crossmember can be used with the TKO without modification. I modified mine, but have since made some changes that wouldn’t have required the mods. See some pictures below.
We also have 68-72 Chevelle 5sp console inserts! $ each, and more pics on this page (click here)
Especially if you have an original automatic transmission car, you will most likely require some tunnel surgery for this transmission, meaning that you will have to "lift" the tunnel. Here’s a couple of solutions (click here). Also note the pics in the article linked above. Yes, you probably WILL have to modify your tunnel in a similar manner to get it installed (regardless of what someone else tells you). The tunnel on your car is simply too small to accomodate this large trans. And do not lower the tailshaft to get the trans to “fit”. Here’s why (click here).
The parts you need for this conversion are listed on the “GM Conversion Package” page.
The centered shifter that comes with the TKO-500 & TKO-600 will work fine with your console. There is no need for the 2” offset shifter. Here’s a bit more info: ‘64-’72 GM Shifter (stock) Tech.
Pontiac LeMans:
Everything is pretty much the same as above for your car. If you have a LeMans and want to convert from an automatic to a 4sp, Old Car Network has the clutch pedal and linkage kit that you need!
Give John at Old Car Network a call, and tell him we sent you.
