Installing a TKO 5 speed transmission into a 1964 - 1967 GM A-Body (Chevelle, Buick, Olds)

Will a TKO-500 or TKO-600 fit in my car?

Yes, these are made to bolt right up to your GM bellhousing, use your flywheel, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, clutch linkages, etc.  So, with the exception of your 10 spline clutch, the GM TKO will bolt right into your car!

The majority of the parts you need for this conversion are listed on the GM Conversion Package page.

You will require some tunnel surgery for this trans, meaning that you will have to "lift" the tunnel.  Here’s a couple of solutions (click here).   Yes, you WILL have to modify your tunnel in a similar manner to get it installed (regardless of what someone else tells you).  The tunnel on your car is simply to small to accomodate this large trans.  And do not lower the tailshaft to get the trans to “fit”.  Here’s why (click here).

The GM TKO 5sp also accepts a  TH350 or TH400 trans mount.   Your stock unit will work fine.

The stock TH350 (oval tube style) crossmember will work without modification. You only need to move it rearward about 2”.  The TH400 style crossmmember will require modification.

The TKO has a 31 spline C6 output shaft that will require a TKO slip yoke to be installed onto your driveshaft, and the driveshaft will need to be shortened by about 2”.

Need clutch pedal and linkage kits? Check out Old Car Network.  They have what you need!  See here  64-66, 67.

What are my options for using a stock console with the TKO?

The original shifter on the ‘64 -’67 cars are offset by 2” toward the driver’s side, and are 16.75” rearward of the bellhousing.  The TKO shifter is centered on the trans, and has a shifter at the needed 16.75” position.

Here’s a bit more info: ‘64-’72 GM Shifter (stock) Tech

Here are some solutions:

#1:  We have a custom shifter that is a 2” offset shifter.  This bolt on shifter allows for a very simple console installation.  You do not need to move or modify your console with this shifter.  Here’s a bit more info and pics (click here).

#2:  If you have an automatic trans console, you could use it also, especially if you do not want to purchase the optional 2” offset shifter.  The shifter opening on the automatic trans console is pretty                     well centered and the shifter opening is retangular in shape.  It can be trimmed and a shifter boot installed.

#3:  TREMEC has a 2” offset Hurst shifter available.  However, it does not fit under your console.
